DrJack: Upward velocity of air within the thermal. Glider descent rate must be subtracted to give the expected variometer reading.



DrJack: Maximum thermalling height over flat terrain under cloudless conditions at which the updraft velocity drops below 225 fpm.



DrJack: Cloudbase for small, non-extensive cumulus clouds in the BL, if such exist.
